The Wrigley Company, one of the largest and most recognized makers of chewing gum, started off by giving free chewing gum to merchants who bought their soap and baking powder. Wal-Mart, probably the biggest company in the world with more than 2 million employees and 8,500 stores worldwide, began as a mom-and-pop business in 1950.
