Whether you studied chemistry in school or have made it your hobby or career, there are some little known facts about our common everyday cooking ingredient – table salt. For example, it is not really a spice, but a mineral. It is also considered to be a pretty stable resistant chemical compound. But if mixed with impurities, it can become contaminated, and apparently useless or dangerous. Salt is also used as a food preservative against decay. When Jesus said that his followers are to be like salt and light in the world, he wasn’t talking about spicing up people’s lives. He wanted to create a strong picture of the kind of positive influence we can be in our relationships and communities. Was Jesus asking too much of us? Did he have a plan on how to be like this?
